A vehicle's muffler is a perfect example of out of sight, out of mind. Although in its case, it's more like out of hearing, out of mind; as anyone who's experienced the racket produced when a muffler wears out can attest, as can their neighbors and everyone they drive past on the street. As its name makes evident, the purpose of the muffler is to minimize (muffle) the constant noise made by thousands of little air bursts produced as pressurized gas is released as part of the internal combustion that powers the car. But that's only half the story, the muffler also plays a role in removing exhaust gas from the engine.

How the Muffler Works

The design of a muffler is quite straightforward. A set of perforated tubes within its metal rounded rectangular body is designed to reflect the sound waves coming off the engine and bounce them off the muffler's back wall, pushing them into its main body where they proceed through a series of perforations through a final chamber and out the exhaust pipe. Meanwhile, it is also removing exhaust gases from the engine via a center tube that sends them out the exhaust pipe along with the now reduced sound of the engine's air bursts.

How a Good Muffler Goes Bad

Rust is usually the main culprit in the deterioration of a car's muffler. Water collects within the exhaust system, and because the exhaust system doesn't reach temperatures hot enough to evaporate it, condensation forms, and, in conjunction with rain, snow, and road salt, and over time, causes the muffler to rust. Other problems can arise from holes, cracks, and loose parts, all of which can result from driving into a pothole or hitting a loose rock.

Signs of A Muffler Has Gone Bad

This is an easy one. The engine will be very loud whenever it runs. This should ever be ignored (as if you could). Remember the muffler also plays a major role in releasing exhaust into the air. Since this function will also be impacted, it can lead to major damage to the catalytic converter and other areas. At this point, you should let your mechanic take a look at it.
