Warranty Work
Warranty Work
Warranties are one of the reasons that people prefer buying new cars, as a warranty can help ensure your peace of mind for years - or thousands of miles, whichever comes first - to come. But many pre-owned vehicles also have warranty options, which you may be able to use to help you find a less expensive vehicle with a similar amount of coverage. Should you require warranty work on your powertrain, for example, warranty coverage can keep you from breaking the bank.
What is a car warranty?
Auto warranties are designed to give you peace of mind, covering repairs or replacing parts within specified limitations. Warranty coverage can come from either the automaker or a third-party service protection plan. These third-party protection plans are typically known as extended warranties. Warranties are offered for both new and pre-owned vehicles.
What are the different types of car warranties?
Before you purchase your next car, it's a good idea to understand your warranty options. Note that each warranty will last until a specified time or mileage is met.
New Car Warranties
Brand-new cars typically come with a number of warranties. Bumper-to-bumper warranties cover non-mechanical car parts for a specified amount of time or mileage. A drivetrain warranty covers engine and transmission performance. A roadside assistance plan sends help when you need it. With rust or corrosion coverage, you're protected against exterior deterioration.
Extended Warranties
An extended warranty will literally extend the warranty coverage that comes with your new vehicle. This type of plan gives you additional years or miles of coverage.
Certified Pre-Owned Warranties
To become a certified pre-owned vehicle, pre-owned cars must pass rigorous tests established by the automaker. This manufacturer coverage varies from brand to brand. Typically, pre-owned warranties provide similar coverage to that of a new vehicle, such as roadside assistance, powertrain, and bumper-to-bumper warranties.
Service Contracts
In lieu of a warranty, you can purchase a service contract. Such an agreement can cover regular maintenance, repairs, or replacement parts.
What are the benefits of warranty coverage?
When you purchase an extended warranty or service contract with your new or pre-owned vehicle, you're gaining peace of mind. Should you require costly repairs, you won't have to pay the entire amount on your own. By adding an extended warranty, you may also enjoy extras like: rental car reimbursement or towing costs; tire and wheel coverage that may not be included in your manufacturer warranty; and trip interruption coverage.
Read the Fine Print
The details of any particular warranty - what it covers and for how long - will vary from warranty to warranty. Yours may ask you to meet a deductible or pay up front for some repairs. Make sure you understand the ins and outs of a particular contract before you sign it.
